Intentional Interim Ministry

The Intentional Interim Ministry (IIM) refers to the process which is entered into by the entire membership of a church between the leaving of the former pastor and the calling of a new pastor.  The “intentional” aspect of the process applies to the deliberate intention on the part of the membership to spend a sufficient amount of time to ask and answer three significant questions:

- “Who are we?”

- “Who do we believe God wants us to be?”

- “How do we become what He wants?”

The congregation nominates and affirms a group of its members to be the “Transition Team.”  The Team’s primary responsibility is to develop a strategy for involving the entire membership in addressing the issues and concerns of five “Focus Points.”  These are:

- HERITAGE:    openly exploring the church’s history, celebrating what the Lord has accomplished through its ministries, learning from the past, deciding what needs to be carried into the future and what needs to be left behind, and using the past as a foundation for developing ministries for the future.

- MISSION:         examining whether the church family’s image of itself is realistic; developing a new or renewed vision as a community of faith; developing an identity as a congregation that is separate from the personalities and leadership styles of former pastors; and establishing a mission which will include the ministry of a new pastor.

- LEADERSHIP:  determining leadership patterns and needs; learning about healthy and open decision-making process and structures; maximizing the diversity within the congregation; updating governing documents; and, developing productive ways to manage conflicts.

- CONNECTIONS: clarifying the church’s theological position; developing healthy relationships with denominational organizations; and,      establishing relationships with the various entities, organizations, and institutions within the community.

- FUTURE:       developing congregational ownership and excitement about the shared vision for the future; setting clear and shared expectations to guide in the search for a new pastor; bringing good closure to the interim period; and, calling and installing the new pastor.

Every member of First Baptist Church is encouraged to participate in opportunities to engage in these five focus points.  Information will be shared regularly and often so that all members will be aware of events that are important to an effective transition period.
